Win starcraft w/ eyes closed

10 years of starcraft wisdom distilled into 3 minutes

Starcraft is a game of micro and macro management of units, resources and time.

Time is measured in actions per minute. We each have a finite number of actions.

To win, one must reduce our opponents army to size 0.

Macro beats micro 6 out of 7 days of the week.

This is because micro can improve a units effectivenesss by 10, giving it nigh-invulnerability from damage.

But macro can replace your losses 10x over, and is far more sustainable in the long run.

Macro is also easier to reproduce.

149 of the top 150 starcraft players were korean. This is because they have a culture of competition in the game that is a lot like russians competitions for chess.

Keep your minerals and gas low. This seems counter-intuitive. A good player will always be making drones, scvs and probes until they have saturated about 3 expansions with 40 probes mining at each one.

Does this work in real life? It does not if you are an individual. Compound interest and index funds is far easier.

Does it work in business? I don't know but mr beast and AWS seem to be using the same strategy to "best in the world" effectiveness.

They both re-invest any money earned back into their business. Sitting on large piles of cash says "i dont have any creative ideas for how to use this."

Now in real life, the failure rate of implementing ideas is about 90%.

There's also 7 billion other players, and in my experience implementing new ideas in reality takes cooperation between large groups of people or else it isn't usually interesting or novel.

Anyway back to starcraft. I think we've had enough strategy and we can now end in comedy.

But to summarize, you win in starcraft by throwing your units at your opponent and then replacing them faster with better resource management.

This was the strategy used in most games by 149 of the top 150 players in competitive starcraft brood war for over a decade.

Does this work in real life? Well, NPCs don't experience consciousness and pain, so sacrificing them is totally okay.

IRL I'd favor more humane solutions like investing in technology and high level communication.

I prefer not to view life like a game, but more of an awe-inspiring experience containing millions of systems and adventures.

When we released the first version of cosmOS last year, it was written in Go. Go is a wonderful programming language with a lot of benefits, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen an article on the front page of Hacker News about rewriting some important tool in Go and I see articles on there about rewriting things in Rust every single week.

use ferris_says::say;
use std::io::{stdout, BufWriter};

fn main() {
    let stdout = stdout();
    let message = String::from("Hello fellow hackers");
    let width = message.chars().count();

    let mut writer = BufWriter::new(stdout.lock());
    say(message.as_bytes(), width, &mut writer).unwrap();
}

I derive a large amount of my self-worth from whether or not Hacker News is impressed with the work I'm doing, so when I realized this, I cancelled all of our existing projects and started migrating everything to Rust immediately.
